Acclaimed artist Yayoi Kusama has passed away. She held her paintbrushes until right before she passed away. She suffered hallucinations as a young child. Kusama turned those childhood hallucinations into vibrant artwork. Polka dots became her primary theme. They appeared across her many paintings and sculptures.

Kusama won the Praemium Imperiale award for her achievements in art. Her work gained global fame. One creation, the Red Pumpkin artwork, became a symbol of Naoshima island. She kept working until she passed away. She made art rooted in her early childhood experiences and her signature polka dots.
