Rejected mail ballots increased in Washington and Oregon following the United States Postal Service changed its postmarking rules.

The new rule led to more ballots being rejected because of late postmarks.

Lawmakers said that, in several Washington counties, the number of rejected ballots more than doubled after the change.

The surge occurred because of the Postal Service's adjustment to how it postmarks mail, affecting voters who sent ballots on or before the deadline.
